Cayuta Red-Light Crash Injures Bryan Woodworth, Kills Passenger

Cayuta, NY, (July 05, 2026) — New York State Police responded early Sunday to a fatal two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 224 and Route 13 in Cayuta.

According to a news release, a 2023 Tesla traveling north on Route 224 allegedly failed to stop for a red traffic signal and entered the intersection just before 5 a.m. A 2023 Dodge Charger traveling east on Route 13 with a green light subsequently struck the Tesla.

A rear-seat passenger in the Tesla was pronounced dead at Robert Packer Hospital. Two other Tesla occupants were hospitalized — one with life-threatening injuries, one with serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Bryan J. Woodworth, 52, of Elmira, was driving the Charger. He was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the New York State Police.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Traffic fatalities across the U.S. fell to 39,345 in 2024, marking a 3.8% decline from the year before, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Despite this broader improvement in road safety, red light running remains a serious and persistent hazard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that 1,086 people died in red light running crashes in 2023, a notable rise from 846 deaths reported in 2018.

Roughly half of those killed in these crashes were pedestrians, cyclists, or occupants of other vehicles struck by the driver who ran the light. The toll extends beyond fatalities as well, with more than 107,000 people injured in similar incidents in 2022. Safety experts point to alcohol impairment, distracted driving, and aggressive behavior behind the wheel as recurring factors behind these largely preventable crashes.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes brought in to help determine exactly what happened,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “All of these resources play an important part in helping clients secure the compensation they’re owed for damages or loss following a collision.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

An injured victim may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim once the investigation concludes.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Those injured in a collision often pursue a personal injury claim to help cover medical expenses, ongoing care, lost income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often indifferent to the costs an injured person continues to accumulate. That’s where an attorney steps in. We fight for victims of these tragedies every day, holding insurance companies accountable for their mistakes,” he added.
