DPS: Cathy Erickson killed in Potter County collision

POTTER, TX, (March 24, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman Tuesday morning in Potter County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred at about 8:39 a.m. at the intersection of Interstate 40 Service Road and Bushland Road. A Peterbilt semi-truck began turning north when it was struck by a southbound Ford F-150.

The pickup driver, Cathy Lynn Erickson of Bushland, died from injuries sustained in the crash. A passenger in the pickup and the semi-truck driver were both seriously injured and transported to a hospital.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Large commercial trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and are often difficult to maneuver. When involved in collisions, these massive vehicles can cause catastrophic injuries or fatalities. In 2022, 4,764 people died in crashes involving large trucks, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Candice Bond, an experienced semi-truck accident attorney, emphasized that investigations into commercial vehicle crashes require extensive resources.

“A knowledgeable attorney can help protect a victim’s family from trucking companies, which frequently dispatch their own investigators and have significant resources to defend a negligent driver,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

In many cases, an accident reconstruction team is necessary to determine how the crash occurred. These efforts are critical in helping victims or their families pursue compensation for losses resulting from a collision, added Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Cathy Lynn Erickson may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests are fully safeguarded.”
