Casey Padula Arrested After Portland Chase Accident Injures Driver

PORTLAND, OR, (April 29, 2026) – One person was seriously injured Wednesday night in a crash involving a driver fleeing from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) in Portland.

According to authorities, deputies attempted to stop a BMW SUV driven by 30-year-old Casey Padula at approximately 9:30 p.m. near Southeast Grand Avenue and Harrison Street after he nearly collided with a patrol vehicle. Padula allegedly refused to comply and continued driving, prompting deputies to pursue.

The chase proceeded onto Interstate 205 before Padula exited at Southeast Stark Street. During the pursuit, he reportedly sideswiped a pickup truck, causing it to overturn. The driver of the pickup sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Padula was later apprehended and taken into custody. He faces multiple charges, including felony eluding, reckless driving, felony driving while suspended, hit-and-run, and four counts of reckless endangerment.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

When a police officer signals a driver to stop, compliance is legally required. Refusing to do so is a criminal offense. Investigators will also review whether proper procedures were followed by law enforcement during the pursuit.

Each year, approximately 300 people are killed in the United States in crashes tied to police pursuits, with nearly one-third being innocent bystanders. Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation in incidents like this to safeguard evidence and protect victims.

“Time is critical in cases such as these, and victims must ensure evidence is examined promptly,” said Bond. “Alongside law enforcement efforts, an attorney can analyze contributing factors, hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, identify witnesses, and review insurance policies. Legal representation helps protect victims’ rights while guiding them through a difficult time.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the injured victim may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, stated that the aftermath of a serious injury can significantly disrupt a victim’s life, affecting family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is essential for victims to retain legal counsel when filing a personal injury claim so negotiations with insurance companies are handled effectively,” Formica explained. “Insurers often attempt to settle quickly for far less than a claim’s true value. An experienced attorney will advocate strongly to ensure fair treatment and proper compensation.”
