Carlos Lopez struck, killed while working in Madison DWI crash

MADISON, WI, (April 30, 2026) – A 23-year-old Campbellsport man was tragically killed Thursday night in a hit-and-run crash involving an alleged drunken driver in Madison.

According to police, Carlos Lopez was struck at about 10 p.m. at the intersection of South Stoughton and Buckeye Roads. Lopez, a construction worker, was placing traffic cones at the time of the incident when he was hit by a van driven by Michael Martin.

Authorities said Martin fled the scene following the crash. Investigators later used traffic camera footage to identify and locate the suspect vehicle, which showed visible damage. When officers made contact with Martin, they reported smelling alcohol on his breath and observed that his eyes were bloodshot and red.

The crash remains under investigation as officials continue to gather evidence regarding the incident.

DWI CRASH INVESTIGATION

In Wisconsin, one person is injured or killed in an alcohol- or drug-impaired crash every 2.4 hours, based on 2022 data.

Impairment from alcohol or drugs reduces a driver’s ability to focus, make sound decisions, and respond quickly to changing road conditions. Alcohol typically takes between 30 minutes and two hours to fully enter the bloodstream.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, commented on incidents like this.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An attorney can provide guidance and support to grieving families, helping protect their legal rights while ensuring impaired drivers are held accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Carlos Lopez may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in fatal accidents can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such tragic events.

“We understand the immense challenges families face after losing a loved one, and safeguarding their rights is crucial,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can stay informed about the official investigation and help ensure the family’s best interests are represented. Relatives may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a tragic accident.”
