ST. PETERSBURG, FL, (May 30, 2026) — A 49-year-old woman was killed Saturday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision involving a City of St. Petersburg dumpster truck, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The victim was identified as Candice Roberts. Investigators said Roberts was lying on the ground in an alley near Third Street N when the city-operated dumpster truck struck her.
Police reported that a bystander had specifically warned the truck operator that people were sleeping in the area before the incident occurred. Authorities said the driver later acknowledged seeing pedestrians before loading the trailer and driving away.
Despite the collision, the operator failed to stop at the scene, police said. Emergency responders arrived and found Roberts suffering from fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later located the 51-year-old truck driver and arrested him. He was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
The St. Petersburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
