MCSO: Calvin Campbell dies after Whiteford Township collision

MONROE, MI, (February 14, 2026) — An 18-year-old Dundee man was killed in a head-on crash late Saturday on U.S. 23 in Whiteford Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the collision occurred just before 10 p.m. south of Sterns Road. Calvin Campbell was driving northbound in the left lane when a southbound SUV entered the northbound lane and struck his pickup truck head-on.

The SUV was driven by a 60-year-old woman from Ottawa Lake, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said she was traveling southbound in the northbound left lane at the time of the crash.

Campbell and his 17-year-old female passenger were transported to Toledo ProMedica Hospital in serious condition. Authorities confirmed that all occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Careless driving was identified as a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

The most common cause of head-on accidents is driver error. However, such collisions may also result from speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, poor roadway design, inexperienced motorists, or driver confusion.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 40,901 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2023, reflecting a 4.3% decrease from 2022 and marking the second consecutive annual decline.

“Key contributing factors that should be carefully assessed include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some instances, accident reconstruction experts are required to determine exactly how a crash unfolded. These investigative efforts are essential in helping families pursue compensation for damages or losses following a serious collision,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Calvin Campbell may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The emotional strain following the sudden loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the profound challenges families face during these difficult times, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and work to safeguard the family’s legal interests.”
