Cailey May dies after being struck by train in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA, (May 22, 2026) – A 31-year-old woman died Friday evening after being struck by a train in a railroad incident in San Diego, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded shortly before 6:30 p.m. to the railroad right-of-way in the 2000 block of California Street near W. Hawthorn Street after reports of a pedestrian on the tracks.

Authorities said Cailey R. May was on the railroad tracks when she was struck by an oncoming train. Emergency responders arrived and immediately performed lifesaving measures.

Despite their efforts, May was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:39 p.m., officials said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed her identity. The cause and manner of death remain under review.

The incident remains under investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

TRAIN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to data from the Federal Railroad Administration, railroad-related incidents in the United States result in approximately 950 fatalities and more than 6,500 injuries each year.

These statistics include fatalities and injuries involving pedestrians, trespassers, railroad workers, passengers, and individuals involved in highway-rail grade-crossing collisions.

FRA reports indicate that such incidents may result from various contributing factors, including human error, track defects, equipment or mechanical malfunctions, signaling or communication failures, and unauthorized access to railroad property.

Candice Bond, an experienced train accident attorney, noted that these factors are typically examined during investigations and emphasized the importance of an independent legal review.

“Train accidents are often complex events, and multiple factors may contribute,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“A skilled attorney can help protect grieving families from railroad companies, which frequently deploy their own investigators immediately after incidents and have substantial resources to defend against liability. An attorney can advocate for families by hiring expert witnesses, identifying witnesses, reviewing insurance coverage, and guiding them through the legal process while protecting their rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the victim may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for emotional distress, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering following a tragic incident.

“The emotional pain following the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We understand the difficulties families face, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can closely follow the official investigation and work to ensure the family’s interests are fully protected.”
