Buddie Thompson dies in chain-reaction collision near Mexia on US 84

MEXIA, TX, (April 27, 2026) – A 92-year-old man was killed Monday morning in a multi-vehicle crash east of Mexia, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Authorities identified the victim as Buddie Marce Thompson. The collision occurred at approximately 9 a.m. along U.S. 84 when a westbound Toyota SUV struck a stopped 2009 Volkswagen Beetle.

DPS troopers said Thompson was waiting to make a left turn when the SUV collided with the rear of his vehicle. The impact forced the Volkswagen across the centerline, where it was struck by an eastbound tractor-trailer.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released the identities of the drivers of the SUV or the tractor-trailer. Additional injuries were reported in the crash.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by DPS.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Multiple factors contribute to the rise in traffic fatalities, particularly driver behavior such as speeding, impaired driving, and distractions like cellphone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 people died in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

As authorities continue to examine the cause and liability in this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation conducted by a qualified attorney.

“Beyond the thorough efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Acting quickly is critical in cases like this, and the victim’s family should ensure that all evidence is preserved and carefully evaluated,” she added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Buddie Thompson may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim. Families who lose a loved one in a tragic accident may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such difficult times, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure the family’s interests are fully represented,” he added.
