NCSHP: Brooks McCoy Ambrose dies in NC-42 Wilson accident

WILSON, NC (April 14, 2026) – A tragic accident Tuesday night claimed the life of a 1-year-old boy in Wilson County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).

Authorities said Brooks McCoy Ambrose was walking in the left eastbound lane of NC-42 near Sadie Road shortly after 8 p.m. when he was struck by an eastbound Freightliner tractor-trailer outside the Wilson city limits.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not disclosed how the boy gained access to the roadway.

The driver remained at the scene, cooperated with authorities, and showed no contributing factors, officials said. No charges are expected at this time. The incident remains under investigation.

A fundraiser has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Every year, more pedestrians lose their lives on U.S. roads. These deaths are preventable—drivers can help stop them by staying attentive behind the wheel. Approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers on U.S. roads in the first half of 2024, the Governors Highway Safety Association said in a report.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and roadway lighting may all contribute and must be carefully evaluated. These steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue the justice they deserve,” added Bond.

“An accident reconstruction team may be required to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping clients obtain financial compensation following a serious collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Brooks Ambrose may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family through this difficult time while ensuring their rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a case may be worth,” Formica added. “However, an attorney will strongly advocate to ensure fair treatment and proper compensation.”
