Veteran and Coach Brenton Collins Killed in Taylor Ridge Accident

TAYLOR RIDGE, IL, (May 31, 2026) — A two-vehicle collision near Taylor Ridge on Sunday evening claimed the life of Seaton Fire Chief Brenton Collins, according to the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Collins, 38, was driving a passenger vehicle when it collided with a truck at approximately 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 134th Avenue West and 105th Street West, an area commonly referred to as Crawford’s Corner.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Collins deceased.

The driver of the truck was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

Collins was widely known throughout the community for his service as Seaton Fire Chief and as a veteran. The Seaton Fire Department paid tribute to him in a social media post, noting that he was always willing to help others, whether responding to emergency calls or assisting neighbors in need.

The department also highlighted Collins’ love of the outdoors, including deer hunting and fishing. In addition to his firefighting duties, Collins had recently completed his second year as the Mercer County High School bass fishing coach.

The crash remains under investigation by the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office.

FATAL TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 40% of vehicle collisions occur at road intersections. Common contributing factors include failure to yield the right of way, impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, has stated that incidents of this nature often require an independent review to help safeguard the rights of victims’ families.

“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents,” said Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process.”

Bond further noted, “In addition to reviewing the police report, an attorney will closely examine all factors that may have contributed to the collision. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help victims and their families navigate what is often a complex process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Brenton Collins may pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this one.

“Stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families face during such a difficult time, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests remain protected.”
