Officials said the incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Aiea Heights Drive near Ulune Street, where the child was struck by a vehicle.

The boy sustained significant injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

No information about the driver has been released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Pedestrians remain among the most at-risk individuals on roadways, even with laws designed to protect them. Many serious injuries occur when drivers fail to pay attention, ignore warning signs, or operate vehicles while impaired.

In Hawaii, an estimated 38 pedestrians were killed and numerous others injured in traffic crashes in 2024, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.

“Having the appropriate resources is essential when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Bond added: “In many cases, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk. Drivers have a responsibility to yield and remain alert at all times.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

“It is almost always the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. Depending on the findings of the investigation, the injured child may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim.

Formica explained that serious injuries can cause significant stress and disruption, impacting family life, education, and financial stability.

“Securing legal representation is important when filing a personal injury claim, as an attorney can handle negotiations with insurance companies on behalf of the victim,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to offer quick settlements that may not reflect the full value of a claim. An attorney will advocate to ensure fair compensation and proper consideration,” he added.
