Blake Baumgartner killed in U.S. 71 accident in Bertha, MSP reports

BERTHA, MN (April 16, 2026) — A 26-year-old man was killed Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 71 and Palomino Road in Bertha, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities said Blake Jason Baumgartner was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado when it was involved in a collision with a 2008 Toyota Camry at approximately 10:49 p.m.

Both vehicles were traveling northbound at the time of the crash within Bertha Township. Baumgartner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Camry, a 20-year-old man from Hewitt, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Astera Hospital.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Traffic fatalities continue to rise nationwide, with driver behavior playing a major role, including speeding, impaired driving, and distractions such as mobile phone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 people were killed in crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

While authorities continue to determine the cause of this crash, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“Beyond the work of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit witness statements, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records from the involved parties,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Timely action is critical in cases like this, and it is important that evidence is reviewed and preserved as efficiently as possible.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Blake Baumgartner may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The grief and emotional burden after losing a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure during such times, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are fully protected.”
