Betty Harris dies in chain-reaction accident near Ritzville WA

RITZVILLE, WA (April 17, 2026) – A 77-year-old woman from Lind, identified as Betty Harris, was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near Ritzville.

According to investigators, Harris was driving southbound on U.S. Route 395 near milepost 91 at approximately 3:36 p.m. when her vehicle came to a stop in the roadway. Authorities said a second vehicle, driven by a 55-year-old woman from Ellensburg, failed to stop and struck the rear of Harris’ vehicle.

The impact caused both vehicles to roll. Harris, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene, about five miles south of Ritzville.

The other driver was transported to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

Both vehicles, a Honda Civic and a Toyota Tundra, were totaled and removed from the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

FATAL TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

According to Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, approximately 90% of rear-end crashes are linked to distracted driving. Common distractions include texting, eating, adjusting in-car controls, observing roadside incidents, or interacting with passengers. Bond emphasized that in cases like this, it is crucial to conduct an independent investigation promptly to preserve key evidence for the victim’s family.

“In addition to the work carried out by law enforcement, an attorney can gather essential evidence to demonstrate whether a driver acted negligently, which often requires extensive resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “A lawyer can revisit witness statements, review available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide grieving families through this difficult time while safeguarding their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family of Betty Harris may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives may seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such a tragic accident.

“The emotional strain after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We recognize the challenges families face and stress the importance of protecting their rights. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure that their best interests are represented throughout the legal process.”
