WHEELER COUNTY, Texas — Authorities are investigating a fatal rollover accident involving a Ford Explorer that occurred on May 1.
The accident happened at approximately 3:39 a.m. on Interstate 40, about 2.7 miles east of Shamrock. A 2020 Ford Explorer traveling west left the roadway, entered the median, and struck a concrete emergency turnaround barrier. The vehicle went airborne, landed in a side skid, and overturned.
Betty Godfrey, 36, was identified as one of the injured. She was a passenger in the vehicle and was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 57-year-old man from Lafe, Arkansas, who was driving the Ford, was also injured and taken to the hospital. Another passenger, a 56-year-old woman from Lafe, Arkansas, was ejected during the accident and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
