Bakersfield, CA (June 28, 2026) — A man was killed early Sunday morning in a crash allegedly caused by a drunk driver at the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane in Bakersfield.
Police said the unidentified victim was driving a BMW that was struck by a Mazda hatchback allegedly operated by Gavin Mundschau at approximately 12:06 a.m. Investigators said Mundschau entered the intersection traveling westbound against a red traffic signal, causing the collision.
The BMW driver suffered major injuries in the crash and was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities determined Mundschau was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, and he was arrested on charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
