Authur Mendenhall dies in Marengo County U.S. 80 crash: ALEA

MARENGO, AL, (January 06, 2026) — A head-on collision on U.S. 80 in Marengo County Tuesday evening claimed two lives and left several others injured, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Authorities said a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Nissan Altima collided head-on around 6:30 p.m., approximately five miles west of Uniontown.

Authur L. Mendenhall, 75, of Pine Hill, was driving the Dodge Ram and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan Altima, a 16-year-old girl from Faunsdale, also died at the scene.

Two adult passengers in the Dodge Ram, a 32-year-old woman from Thomasville and a 56-year-old woman from Pine Hill, were transported to Whitfield Regional Hospital. A 5-year-old child and a 3-year-old child riding in the pickup were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

A 17-year-old passenger in the Altima was airlifted to UAB Hospital in critical condition. Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the United States recorded 33,654 fatal motor vehicle crashes in 2018, resulting in 36,560 deaths. This equates to 11.2 fatalities per 100,000 people and 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting are routinely evaluated and must be carefully reviewed during an investigation,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are brought in to help determine how a crash occurred. These investigative tools are essential in assisting victims and families seeking financial recovery after a serious or fatal collision,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Authur Mendenhall may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering resulting from a catastrophic accident.

“The emotional toll following the sudden loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Our firm understands the challenges families face during these moments. Protecting their legal rights is critical, and a wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation while advocating for the family’s best interests,” Bond stated.
