Austin Gentry killed crossing I-55 in Tangipahoa

TANGIPAHOA, LA (March 28, 2026) – Austin B. Gentry, 26, of Independence, was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish.

According to Louisiana State Police, Gentry had been involved in an earlier crash on the southbound side of I-55 just south of Louisiana Highway 442 near Tickfaw at approximately 11 p.m.

Before emergency crews arrived, Gentry exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the northbound lanes. He was wearing dark clothing in an unlit section of the roadway when he was struck by a northbound 2010 Toyota Corolla.

Gentry died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the Corolla was not injured and showed no signs of impairment.

The investigation is ongoing.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year, pedestrian fatalities continue to rise across the United States. Many of these tragic incidents are preventable when drivers remain alert and cautious. The Governors Highway Safety Association reported that approximately 3,304 pedestrians were killed in the first half of 2024 alone.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and roadway lighting must be carefully evaluated as they may contribute to a crash. A thorough investigation is essential to help families pursue justice after a loss,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team is often necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources play a critical role in helping victims or their families pursue compensation following a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of the victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families who lose a loved one in a tragic accident may seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress,” Formica said.

An attorney can provide guidance and support to families during this difficult time while ensuring their legal rights are protected.

“Insurance companies may attempt to settle claims quickly for less than they are worth,” Formica added. “An attorney will advocate strongly on behalf of the client to ensure fair compensation and proper treatment.”
