AUGUSTA, GA, (July 05, 2026) – An Augusta man died Sunday from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run crash while performing landscaping work on a city sidewalk, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said James Waugh, 30, was trimming vegetation near the intersection of Lumpkin Road and Jennifer Court at approximately 3:47 p.m. on June 30 when a 2011 Ford F-150 left the roadway and struck him. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Waugh was transported to Wellstar MCG Health with serious injuries and later succumbed to those injuries on July 5, authorities said.
Using surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store and Flock camera data, investigators identified the suspected driver. A 53-year-old man was taken into custody on July 1 and charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury and serious injury by vehicle.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal hit-and-run.
