ATLANTIC BEACH, NY, (March 24, 2026) — Tony Thomas, a 59-year-old Far Rockaway resident, was killed Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run collision in Atlantic Beach, NY, police reported.
Authorities said Thomas was riding his bicycle near Beech Street and Scott Drive when an eastbound Honda HRV struck him around 7:46 a.m. The driver fled the scene. Thomas died from his injuries. The HRV driver was later apprehended and charged with leaving the scene causing death.
By law, drivers involved in a collision must remain at the scene until authorities arrive, yet many flee due to intoxication, lack of license, or fear of arrest.
From 2018 to 2022, over 4 million people were involved in hit-and-run crashes nationwide, with more than 12,000 fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
