Athens Police: Engel Dies After Left-Turning Car Strikes Moped

Athens, GA (June 12, 2026) — A 66-year-old man who was critically injured in a June 12 vehicle vs. moped crash has died, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced.

According to officials, David Keith Engel was operating a 2025 moped westbound on Lexington Road just after 4 p.m. when an eastbound 2014 Honda Accord attempted a left turn at East Meadow Drive and collided with the moped.

Engel was thrown from his moped in the crash and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and the 26-year-old Honda driver is facing potential charges.

MOPED CRASH INVESTIGATION

Data from moped and scooter accidents shows concerning trends, with NHTSA figures indicating riders face a fatality risk 35 times higher than occupants of passenger vehicles. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates moped and scooter crashes led to roughly 50,000 emergency room visits and at least 27 deaths between 2017 and 2019.

Candice Bond, an experienced moped and motor scooter accident attorney, said crashes like this one are frequently the result of driver negligence.

Bond emphasized that in cases such as this, launching an independent investigation promptly is essential to protecting the rights of the victim’s family.

“Having the right resources is critical when investigating a scooter accident case and establishing that a motorist acted negligently,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Moped riders, much like pedestrians and bicyclists, are considered ‘vulnerable users’ of the roadway, which means larger vehicles need to exercise extra caution around them.”

“Factors such as road conditions, signage visibility, and street lighting all need to be carefully examined, as they may have contributed to the crash.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of David Engel may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for the loss of companionship, along with pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“Losing a loved one in an accident brings a level of grief and stress that can feel unbearable,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We know firsthand what families go through in these situations, and protecting their rights matters greatly. A wrongful death lawyer stays closely engaged with the official investigation to help safeguard their legal rights and best interests.”
