Ashleah Hayes fatally hit in Leesburg pedestrian accident

LEESBURG, FL, (April 10, 2026) — A 40-year-old woman was killed early Friday morning in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash in Leesburg, authorities said.

Investigators reported that Ashleah Hayes was struck by a Hyundai sedan at approximately 12:09 a.m. near U.S. Highway 27 and English Road, just south of Singletary Park. Hayes, a Leesburg resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 27 when it hit Hayes as she was crossing the roadway. The driver fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Police say the suspected vehicle, believed to have front-end damage, has been located and is now in custody. The case remains active, and authorities plan to recommend charges to the State Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation.

The driver who struck Hayes and fled will likely face criminal charges once apprehended. Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offense, and statistics indicate that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute nationwide.

Many drivers flee because they may be impaired, unlicensed, or fearful of arrest if they remain at the scene.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that in such cases, it is crucial to conduct an independent investigation promptly to protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is essential when examining a hit-and-run accident and establishing negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully assessed. These steps are vital to helping families obtain justice and appropriate compensation, while ensuring accountability for reckless drivers.”

Approximately 2,000 people are killed each year in hit-and-run crashes in the United States, and since 2009, these fatalities have risen by about 7% annually.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Ashleah Hayes may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful conduct leads to another person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “In cases involving unsafe driving, distraction, speeding, hit-and-run incidents, or impairment, families are often left with the option to pursue a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”
