Arnulfo Hernandez Critically Injured by Car in Los Angeles Crash

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 20, 2026) — A 77-year-old street vendor remains hospitalized after a vehicle struck his tamale stand in Los Angeles, leaving him with multiple serious injuries, according to police.

Authorities said Arnulfo Hernandez was selling tamales with his wife on Maple Street on June 20 when a vehicle hit the stand and struck him. Hernandez sustained multiple fractures, including breaks to both sides of his hip, and has undergone surgery.

Family members said Hernandez and his wife had sold tamales on the same street corner for approximately 20 years to support their close-knit family. His recovery is expected to take several months.

According to Hernandez’s family, the unidentified driver was using a cell phone at the time of the collision. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during daylight hours, approximately 481,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving.

That creates a significant risk of deaths and injuries on U.S. roadways. Sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off the road for about five seconds. At 55 miles per hour, that is comparable to traveling the length of an entire football field without looking at the roadway.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted as soon as possible to preserve evidence for an injured victim.

“In addition to the thorough work performed by law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “By serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide an injured victim and their family through this difficult time while protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Arnulfo Hernandez may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the emotional and financial strain following a serious injury can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including family responsibilities, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“While no financial award can undo the effects of a devastating injury, it is important that victims understand their legal rights and the compensation that may be available under the law,” Formica said. “The injured victim in this collision may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim and seek damages for medical expenses, future medical treatment, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.”
