FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Special Traffic Investigation unit assumed control of the investigation into the deadly collision.

The crash marked El Paso’s 20th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 22 fatalities reported during the same period last year, according to the El Paso Police Department. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that 5,975 pedestrian-related traffic crashes occurred statewide in 2019, resulting in 669 deaths — a 5% increase over the previous year.

“Roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility are all factors that investigators carefully review in serious pedestrian crashes,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

An estimated 6,590 pedestrians were killed nationwide in 2019, marking the highest total in more than three decades. The National Safety Council also reported that approximately 150,000 pedestrians suffered injuries in vehicle crashes in 2018.
