Ann-Maria Wilson Hit by Fleeing Driver in Richland County, SC

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC — June 26, 2026 — A woman was hospitalized Friday after a driver allegedly fled from Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies and caused a collision that left her injured, authorities said.

Ann-Maria Wilson was traveling in a vehicle in the area of Benedict Street and Farrow Road when her car was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Akeem Campbell, 34. According to investigators, the incident began when a deputy attempted to pull Campbell over after he failed to signal at the intersection of Mason Road and Sinclair Drive. Campbell allegedly refused to stop and fled, triggering a pursuit that ended in the crash.

Wilson sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Details on the severity of her injuries were not publicly disclosed.

Campbell was taken into custody following the crash. He faces multiple charges, including failure to stop for blue lights, reckless driving, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

When a law enforcement officer attempts to stop a motorist, that driver is legally obligated to comply. Fleeing from police is a criminal offense, and investigators will additionally examine whether officers followed proper departmental protocol throughout the course of the pursuit.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 577 people were killed nationwide during police pursuits in 2022 alone. In cases involving fleeing suspects, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, stressed that retaining legal counsel to conduct an independent investigation is critical to securing evidence and protecting a victim’s rights.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and a victim must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney will carefully examine what may have contributed to the crash and has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a client during this difficult time, while vigorously protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Ann-Maria Wilson may have the right to file a personal injury lawsuit stemming from this incident. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the emotional burden and anxiety that follow a serious injury can be overwhelming, touching every aspect of a victim’s daily life, including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life.

“Although no amount of money can make up for a devastating injury, it is important that a victim is made fully aware of their rights and what they are entitled to under the law,” Formica said. “The injured victim in this collision may be entitled to a personal injury claim, and they may seek recovery for damages including medical expenses, future medical care, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.”
