Scooter rider girl injured in Ankeny crash with Mario Palafox-Manzano

ANKENY, IA (May 03, 2026) – A Des Moines man has been arrested following a hit-and-run crash on Sunday evening that seriously injured a 14-year-old girl in Ankeny, Polk County, authorities said.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the teenager was riding a scooter near the intersection of Northwest 94th Avenue and Highway 415 at approximately 6:25 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle.

Investigators identified the driver as Mario Palafox-Manzano, 18, of Des Moines. Officials said he fled the scene without rendering aid to the injured victim.

The 14-year-old girl was transported to a hospital with serious injuries following the collision.

Palafox-Manzano was taken into custody on Monday. He faces charges of leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, failure to render aid, and a traffic infraction.

PEDESTRIAN HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Drivers involved in collisions have a legal duty to remain at the scene, especially when injuries are involved, to ensure immediate medical assistance is provided to victims.

Hit-and-run crashes remain a persistent issue across the United States. Data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety indicates that hundreds of thousands of such incidents occur annually, with a crash happening every minute on average.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, stressed that early independent investigation is critical in such cases to safeguard the rights of injured victims.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

She added that detailed investigative work is essential to establish accountability and support injured victims in obtaining justice and compensation. Accident reconstruction experts may also be required to analyze the crash and determine exactly how it occurred, according to Accident Injury News.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the 14-year-old girl injured in this crash may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. Such incidents often create significant emotional, physical, and financial stress that can disrupt daily life and family stability.

“As personal injury attorneys, our job is to provide both legal information and advice to those who have been injured in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

He added that legal representation is important to ensure victims are protected during communication with insurance companies and law enforcement, helping prevent statements from being used unfairly.

Formica further noted that insurance providers may attempt to settle quickly for less than a claim’s true value. However, legal counsel can advocate on behalf of victims to ensure fair compensation and proper treatment throughout the claims process.
