Pedestrians face disproportionate danger in hit-and-run crashes both nationally and in Iowa. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, while hit-and-runs represent only 11 percent of all motor vehicle accidents nationally, 60 percent of the approximately 1,500 annual hit-and-run fatalities are pedestrians.
In Iowa, 29 pedestrians were killed in 2023 traffic crashes, representing part of the 107 deaths (30%) involving people not in cars during the state’s worst traffic fatality year in seven years.
