Andre Paz Killed in Highland Park Head-On Collision on Illinois 41

HIGHLAND PARK, IL, (May 16, 2026) – A tragic two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon in Highland Park claimed the lives of a toddler and an elderly driver, according to local authorities.

The Highland Park Police Department said the crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois 41 and Park Avenue W. Investigators determined that a 2026 Hyundai Sonata traveling north on Route 41 collided with a 2006 Toyota Sienna that was turning south onto the highway from Park Avenue.

Police identified one of the victims as 21-month-old Andre Paz of Round Lake, who was riding as a rear passenger in the Hyundai. Andre sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Toyota, a 73-year-old woman from Wilmette, was extricated from her vehicle by emergency responders before being taken to the hospital. Authorities said she later succumbed to her injuries.

A third individual involved in the crash suffered unspecified injuries.

The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County assisted Highland Park police with the investigation while Route 41 remained closed for several hours as crews processed the scene and cleared damaged vehicles.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

A number of factors contribute to the increase in traffic fatalities, with driver behavior remaining one of the leading causes. Speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving — especially cellphone use — continue to play major roles in serious crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 8,055 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents during the first quarter of 2025.

As investigators work to determine the cause and liability in this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“Alongside the efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit key witness statements, review surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain phone and text records from the potentially liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“In cases like this, acting quickly is extremely important so that critical evidence can be preserved and thoroughly examined,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of a victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for emotional distress, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship following a tragic accident.

“The emotional stress and grief that follow the loss of a loved one in an accident can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the hardships families are suddenly forced to endure, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can stay informed on the official investigation while helping ensure that the family’s rights and interests remain protected,” Formica added.
