Amelia Reyes Mendoza succumbs to injuries after Texas Rear-End crash

MILAM, TX, (May 11, 2026) – A 68-year-old Cameron woman died Monday following a rear-end collision in a construction zone on U.S. 77 in Milam County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities identified the victim as Amelia Reyes Mendoza.

Investigators said Mendoza was driving a Chevrolet SUV eastbound near County Road 203 at approximately 9 a.m. when her vehicle was struck from behind by a Dodge SUV. Officials noted that traffic on the highway had been reduced to one lane due to a TxDOT pavement project, and vehicles were being guided through the area by a pilot vehicle while eastbound traffic was stopped by a construction flagger.

According to DPS, the driver of the Dodge allegedly failed to control speed, causing a chain-reaction crash.

Mendoza was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Four additional victims were also taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating, authorities said.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that distracted driving contributes to nearly 90 percent of rear-end collisions nationwide.

Common distractions linked to these crashes include texting while driving, adjusting in-vehicle controls, observing roadside incidents, and interacting with passengers. Rear-end accidents may also result from speeding, tailgating, impaired driving, and other reckless behaviors.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), rear-end crashes cause roughly 950,000 injuries and 2,000 fatalities annually in the United States.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said that in cases like this, it is crucial to begin an independent investigation quickly to help preserve important evidence for the victim’s family.

“In addition to the efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can gather evidence needed to demonstrate whether a driver acted negligently or recklessly, which often requires significant resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “An attorney may revisit the scene, speak again with witnesses, review available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records connected to the at-fault driver. Legal counsel can also help guide a grieving family through the process while protecting their rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Amelia Reyes Mendoza may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages including medical costs, funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the loss of love and companionship.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person loses their life due to another party’s negligent or wrongful actions,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “When fatal vehicle accidents are linked to distracted driving, speeding, aggressive behavior, impaired driving, or other unsafe conduct, surviving family members often have the option of filing a civil claim against the responsible driver.”
