MILAM, TX, (May 11, 2026) – A 68-year-old Cameron woman died Monday following a rear-end collision in a construction zone on U.S. 77 in Milam County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Authorities identified the victim as Amelia Reyes Mendoza.
Investigators said Mendoza was driving a Chevrolet SUV eastbound near County Road 203 at approximately 9 a.m. when her vehicle was struck from behind by a Dodge SUV. Officials noted that traffic on the highway had been reduced to one lane due to a TxDOT pavement project, and vehicles were being guided through the area by a pilot vehicle while eastbound traffic was stopped by a construction flagger.
According to DPS, the driver of the Dodge allegedly failed to control speed, causing a chain-reaction crash.
Mendoza was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Four additional victims were also taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation.
