The Texas Department of Transportation reported 808 pedestrian fatalities and 5,924 pedestrian-involved crashes across the state in 2023. The agency also noted that pedestrian deaths increased by 22 percent between 2019 and 2023, highlighting the increasing risks faced by people walking along Texas roadways.
Although pedestrians are involved in only 1% of all Texas traffic crashes, they account for 19% of all roadway fatalities. The most common contributing factors include drivers failing to yield the right-of-way and inattentive driving.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, the growing popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks has contributed to the rise in pedestrian fatalities because these larger vehicles can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. The organization says this reflects a nationwide trend that has resulted in a nearly 60% increase in pedestrian deaths since 2013.
