DPS: Adelaida Gomez dies in U.S. 77 Cameron wrong-way accident

CAMERON, TX, (April 25, 2026) – A 53-year-old Conroe woman was killed in a wrong-way crash early Saturday morning in Cameron County, according to authorities.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the collision occurred at approximately 5:07 a.m. along U.S. 77 south, just south of Orphanage Road.

Investigators reported that Adelaida Gomez was a passenger in a Honda Accord when it was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro driven by 22-year-old Joey Gael Estrada. The Camaro was allegedly traveling northbound in the southbound lanes at the time of the crash.

Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released information regarding the condition of the Honda driver.

Estrada was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide and possession of a controlled substance.

The crash remains under investigation.

WRONG-WAY ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Wrong-way crashes on high-speed roadways are uncommon, but they’re almost always fatal, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

The most common cause of these types of accidents is driver error. Such crashes can be caused by drunk driving, distracted driving, poor road design, and confusion on the part of the driver. According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 400 people are killed each year in wrong-way wrecks.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, stressed that in cases like this, it is crucial to initiate an independent investigation through a reputable law firm as soon as possible to preserve key evidence.

“Beyond the initial police report, an attorney will thoroughly examine all contributing factors of the crash,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Legal counsel can engage expert witnesses, perform background checks on the driver, identify witnesses, and review all applicable insurance policies. Acting as an advocate, an attorney also helps guide families through this difficult time while safeguarding their legal rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Adelaida Gomez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a devastating accident.

“We recognize the immense hardship families endure after such a tragic loss, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will closely follow the official investigation and work to ensure that the family’s interests are protected. Loved ones of victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other related losses after a catastrophic accident.”
