CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Meclenburg police are searching for the suspect who caused a crash that resulted in a pedestrian being fatally struck on a sidewalk.
Detectives with the CMPD Major Crash Investigation unit responded to the accident near the 4300 block of North Tryon Street around 12:50 a.m. July 6. Officers found Ace Nathaniel Chambers, 74, lying unresponsive in the road. A 2007 Chrysler 300 with heavy damage was also at the scene.
Chambers was pronounced after the accident.
A preliminary investigation indicated a collision involving two vehicles occurred that resulted in Chambers being struck by one vehicle while walking on a nearby sidewalk. The vehicle that caused the crash fled before officers arrived.
A 35-year-old man driving the Chrysler was identified along with two juvenile passengers. Speed does not appear to be a factor for that driver, but he was charged with DWI after screening.
It remains unknown if speed or impairment were factors for the fleeing vehicle.
