CALERA, Ala.— A vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car on Interstate 65 left one person dead and another seriously injured, authorities said.
The Shelby County Coroner identified Lakisha Franklin, a 49-year-old resident of Perry, Florida, as the victim killed in the accident. Emergency responders pronounced her deceased at the scene, near milepost 227.
Calera police reported that the accident occurred at 8:20 p.m. on April 7. A passenger car and an 18-wheeler collided on the northbound lane, leaving one person trapped and requiring extensive emergency response.
Alabama State Troopers later closed both northbound lanes for further investigation. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to investigate the incident, which is being treated as a potential crime scene due to possible criminal charges.
