COLUMBUS, Ohio— A pedestrian was fatally struck by two vehicles early Sunday morning on Interstate 71 North in Columbus. Authorities identified the victim as 23-year-old Tania Irvin.
The accident occurred around 3:25 a.m. near North Broadway Street. Irvin was walking in the left lane of I-71 northbound after her vehicle struck the median and became disabled.
As she walked on the roadway, a vehicle struck her, followed by another vehicle while she lay on the road. Neither driver stopped at the scene.
Emergency responders pronounced Irvin dead at 3:33 a.m., according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Police are actively investigating the accident and urging anyone with information to contact the Accident Investigation Unit.

2049 people were killed by hit-and-run crashes in 2016 — a 62 percent increase from 2009, the last year in which a downward trend was recorded. AAA said the data makes 2016 the deadliest year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.
